New Classical. For Spring Summer 2017, Mary Katrantzou looked introspectively to Greece, the country of her birth. Exploring its rich history, mythology and culture, she dug deep into her own work. This collection is an archaeological exploration, unearthing the classics of Katrantzou.

The ancient civilisation of the Minoans gave initial inspiration. Their culture, as we experience it through their artefacts, is dominated by the female. Feminine deities proliferated, women priests officiated; taking centre stage on Minoan frescos, intricately fashioned and decorated. The earliest European civilisation made the earliest fashion statement and Katrantzou reinforces this within the collection.

Katrantzou combines the ancient with the hyper-modern, fusing classicism with futurism and sixties art. Ancient artefacts are warped through op-art designs, mapped across the topography of the body to create new focal points and emphasis. Thucydides and Clytemnestra on acid.

The Minoans surrender inspiration from their frescos, the specific giving way to more abstract interpretations of the “Greco”. Mycenaean pottery patterns are used to decorate garments, the instantly-identifiable Greek key meander borders garments. The fitted silhouette mirrors Minoan dress, but also curvaceous amphora vases, streamlined and made modern.

In exploring the cultural signature of her Hellenic heritage, Katrantzou was drawn into the archives, digging through her creative past to establish her own cannon of classics. The collection marks a return to her trademark of trompe l’oeil prints, technically superlative across hourglass-seamed dresses and slender trousers with tunics. Re-embracing silhouettes and techniques she made her signature, the peplum echoes the curvaceous lines of the women of Minoan’s "matriarchal religion,” given a new fluidity.

Katrantzou’s love of jewellery manifests in dresses crafted from armoured plates, like jewelled Sparta warriors via Kubrick. Embroideries emerge in her interpretation of Minoan women and their artefacts, intricately beaded and highlighted in Swarovski. Continuing her exploration of textile innovation, fluid chainmail is mounted with lace and overprinted, exposing frames of psychedelic infused figures with hourglass silhouettes pulled in and keyed close to the body via grid smocking.

A search for timeless modernity, epitomised by Greek classicism, leads Katrantzou to investigate the interpretations of the ancient world by others: an embroidered profile and olive-bearing doves of peace recalls Jean Cocteau, while elongated sinuous skirts echo the Greek-influenced lines of the forties. Graphic arrows of olive leaf inspired jewellery further frame the face. Letter clutches re-imagined from the archive combine to create new artefacts for the modern age.

An embrace of her own culture background recontextualises Katrantzou’s signatures: her prints, her silhouettes, her heritage. The language is Mary Katrantzou, but the key is Greek.

  • Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week to present Mary Katrantzou

Stuttgart/Beijing. Mercedes-Benz is proud to announce that Mary Katrantzou will showcase her Autumn/Winter 2016 collection at Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week, a first for the award-winning, London based designer. The highly anticipated catwalk show will take place in Beijing on March 27, 2016 as part of Mercedes-Benz’ successful International Designer Exchange Program, which has enriched fashion weeks globally.

As one of the stars of London Fashion Week designer Mary Katrantzou’s involvement marks an exciting time for Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week. The platform was established in 1997 and in partnership with Mercedes-Benz since 2011, the biannual showcase of contemporary Chinese design has evolved into an unmissable event on the international fashion calendar. Thanks to the luxury automobile manufacturer’s support and initiatives such as the International Designer Exchange Program, a spotlight is shone on the thriving fashion scene in China at what is a time of unprecedented global interest in the region.

Mary Katrantzou is famed for her kaleidoscopic use of colour, embroidery, hyper-real prints and demi–couture artistry making her pieces instantly recognisable. She presented her first collection at London Fashion Week in September 2008 after graduating, with distinction, from the Master of Arts Fashion course at London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins. The Greek-born designer has won critical acclaim and impressive commercial success for her designs and is currently stocked in over 250 stores across 60 countries. Over the last twelve months she has been awarded the British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, the New Establishment Designer at the 2015 British Fashion Awards, Red Carpet Designer at the Elle Style Awards and Breakthrough Designer at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards. Her creations are a favourite on the red carpet and her dresses have been worn and loved by discerning women the world over, including Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, Naomi Harris, Diane Kruger and Alicia Vikander. She has a loyal global customer base of women, similar to herself, who are leaders and influencers within their own fields.

A leader of London’s digital-print revolution Mary Katrantzou has made a notable move away from print to experiment with new textiles and fabrications that have re-energised her collections and challenged pre-conceptions of her work. July 2015 saw Katrantzou launch her first resort collection, her most commercial offering yet. She has also successfully added an accessories line to her eponymous label with typography-inspired tote bags and clutch bags that reference her rich archive.

Through the International Designer Exchange Program, Mercedes-Benz has cemented its commitment to nurturing emerging and established designers, by providing them with the unrivalled opportunity to access key international markets. Of the exchange, Mary Katrantzou says: “I'm so excited to be going to China, as a country that welcomes and appreciates strong creativity and design and as one of the biggest luxury markets of the world. It's an honour to be included in Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week, it's a huge opportunity and I'm thrilled to be a part of it.”

“For more than 20 years we have been committed to the fashion world and promoting young, creative, talented people who passionately represent variety and quality in the fashion sector,” says Michael Bock, Director Sport- & Lifestyle Marketing Mercedes-Benz. “The creative eye of Mary Katrantzou, her extraordinary craftsmanship skills and use of the most complex patterns and compositions, as well as her unique selection of materials are aligned with the properties we also value when designing and building our cars.”

As a reciprocal part of the International Designer Exchange Program, Chinese designer Xiao Li will have the honour of closing London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2016 on February 23, 2016.

Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2016 takes place from 25 to 31 March 2016.

Love’s young dream. For Autumn Winter 2016, Mary Katrantzou is enamoured by a love story of opposing halves and attractive opposites, masculine fusing with feminine. Fashion is a verb: to fashion, to make. Fashion is the act of “making” love.

Inspiration initially came from two aspirational, archetypal models of children growing up: the cowboy and the princess. Here they fuse together into singular garments, collaging gendered elements - rodeo is cross-pollinated with Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, to create a new and arresting hybrid.

Cinema is a key reference: Wild At Heart, Natural Born Killers, Baz Luhrman’s Romeo and Juliet. All tell a twisted tale, but all start with the freedom and innocence of young love, the old tale of boy meets girl. The cinematic starting-point infused the collection with the notion of Americana, panoramic cinematic landscapes and saturated Technicolor imagery, Andy Warhol’s portraits of Cowboys and queens in unreal silkscreened shades. These colour the collection, literally and figuratively.

Just as the collection is inspired by the individual identities of star cross’d lovers, so the focus is on the individual item. Each garment has been designed as a singular piece, made precious and unique. They are combined to form a look, but stand-alone not as a fragment, but a fully-realised whole.

Motifs from different worlds are paired into couples, aesthetic Romeos and Juliets. Butterflies find counterparts with eagles, hellfire flames with angels’ wings, hearts with stars. The body becomes a work of art.

Fabrics are themselves gendered, garments becoming rendezvous-points for masculine coated fabrics to meet with feminine touches of airtex embroideries, tulle intarsia pleats and Swarovski crystal embellishment. Hi-vis reflective fabric fragments are embedded in embroidery. Ballerina tulle is appliquéd with nylon, intricately accordion pleated and pieced.

Silhouettes are graphic, the garments everyday classics elevated by their marriage to Katrantzou’s aesthetic and workmanship. Narrow caban coat shapes, denim jacket shapes, pussy-bow blouses, shirt-dresses and full skirts - a full vocabulary of clothing. A pair of narrow coats created by specialists FunTastic Furs are intricately pieced with multi-hued Saga Mink®, the melange of pattern reminiscent of the two-dimensional graphic plane of a cowboy boot.

The set underlines the overriding themes of duality, lovers, and love lost. A foiled set is filled with silver balloons, a recreation of a prom in Warholian mirror.

  • In the Studio: Pre-Fall 2016

Mary Katrantzou’s second Pre-Fall Collection draws inspiration from literary science fiction, in particular the writings of Isaac Asimov and Philip K. Dick and the distinctive themes found in cult 60s sci-fi that nod to its associated futurism.

Discover the complete collection

The topic of science fiction is woven into a colour infused portrayal of a dream like future. Feminine but sharp silhouettes are emphasised with textural colour blocking; mimicking waves, rays and ripples creating the illusion of an embossed surface. Dresses, tops and trousers are accented with silver knitted tube trimmings that run along strategically designed seam lines. The dystopian hues of pistachio and soft pink used in illustrations of vintage robots are contrasted to deeper tones of malachite, ruby red and topaz; referencing the enamelled wavelike patterns of Qing dynasty snuff boxes that became symbols of status.

The metallic nature of the collection is also fabricated in knitted and silk jacquards that are complemented by puzzle pieced camouflage. An inventive technique using bonded framis adds depth to the metallic fabrics, reflecting the essence of a future history.

The exploration of geometric shapes is juxtaposed with curvilinear themes serving to flatter the female form through layered crepe de chine pieces, their fluid ease found in one piece and two piece floor length dresses. Graphic patterns in micro repetition crafted in this seasons lighter woven fabrics provide the perfect base for the working twin set. A tunic dress over flared trousers and a boxy jacket over a cigarette trouser give the wearer a pared down alternative to the more vibrant and retro futuristic looks.

Daywear is a welcome addition to the pre fall collection. It comes in the form of double faced cashmere and feminine layered blouses. Grey on the outside with camel on reverse the cashmere pieces range from a form fitting tailored coat, to a flouncy knee length skirt and an architectural cape. This pared down simplicity is a departure for Katrantzou whose maximalist aesthetic also produced multi rainbow hued patterns nodding to traditional Japanese tapestries. In some cases they form borders around the colour blocked pieces unfolding into a landscape print they take the form of a cropped leather jacket, a pleated skirt and an empire line blouse dress.

In Katrantzou's pre fall collection, the dystopian nature of science fiction is used as a palette cleanser, signifying the tension between literary futurism in the western world and popular symbols of status in the Imperial courts of Eastern culture.

Horror vacui vs modernism. Heritage vs techy. The billowing bourgeoisie vs the restrained rectilinear. For Autumn/Winter 2015 Katrantzou observes the inverse relationship between the horror vacui art movement and reactionary modernism. An exploration of the relationship between heritage opulence and techy utopia, the collection seeks to redefine the parameters of modern pre-luxury and documents the significance of value perception.

From the victorian grandiose, a maximalist demonstration of wealth and social stature through heady excess, to the heritage - stealth wealth. The collection juxtaposes both paradigms, capturing the filtered beauty within each. The linear contrasts with the sinuous; the modernist restraint is in dialogue with the floridly embellished and kenophobia is observed through a purist lens.

Perceptions are inverted. Flared skirt panels are realised through tucks, ties and wadded hem channels. Hand-folded pvc strips create tubular volume; slim plasticised strands are embroidered onto traditional damasks adding depth and dimension. Flocked tulle and intarsia mink cut in purist lines offset with Swarovski Crystal and macro sequin geo embroidery. Patterns are drawn from heritage fabrics - classic damasks, rose prints and paisleys intertwined with techy organza pleats, plasticised ruffle bands and graphic foam appliqué.

This collection challenges and explores our notions of status, value and plain good taste, find your own piece at Mary Katrantzou Online.

Cosmology was a means of ancient societies trying to make sense of the universe. It was regarded a complex and orderly system, the opposite of chaos. Labyrinths are ferociously organised structures, chaotic and constructed to confuse. These two ideologies, cosmic and chaos, fuse in Mary Katrantzou’s Spring/Summer 2016 Collection, expressing the concept of movement, of voyage into uncharted territories. An exploration of exploration. Exploration is evoked through reference to wide-ranging cultures, combining different elements of their styles to create a new, modern hybrid. Balkan dress, Spanish and Romanian attire, heritage tailoring and French couture workmanship are all interwoven to create a unique whole, a labyrinth of references forming a new image. Godets of print, colour and maze-like channels of lace are inserted into wool and pinstripe chain tailoring, alongside puzzling pieces of print and lace and matelasse patterns inspired by roses – embroidered into a natural labyrinth. Insertions splice apart the jackets and coats, emphasising their complexity and allowing us to comprehend their structure, as in cosmology. The cosmos itself appears not only ideologically, but literally. Embroideries and prints draw on the Flammarion engraving of medieval cosmology, frequently used as an illustration of the quest for knowledge. Rorsachach test prints - again, finding order in that which is organic, disordered or chaotic - inspire not only the print but the form of scarf-draped tops and dresses unfurling from a central point with mirrored panels. Closures are kept simple with ribbon ties, drawing shapes together. The palette is solarised, contrasting brilliant, glowing colour with an undercurrent of sombre midnight shades. Metallic inserts, ribbons and pipings in lamé and chromed pearls glow. As with Ariadne's thread - the unfurling silk that solved the riddle of the labyrinth - Mary Katrantzou leads us to the solution of a puzzle of her own devising, mapping her own aesthetic voyage.

  • Behind The Tectonic Plate

In early geologic times, the Earth was dominated by a supercontinent, the mass of the scattered geography we know today combined into a single body, smothering one-third of the planet’s surface and surrounded by a global ocean. That mass was dubbed Pangaea, meaning “all the Earth” and the ocean Panthalassa, "all the ocean." Some 200 million years ago, The jigsaw puzzle of land was pulled apart, to form something new. In abstraction, the idea is evocative of movement, pulling and shifting, the settling into position of our contemporary continents. It inspires a narrative, expressed through a combination of naturalistic forms and abstract shapes breaking on the body in sharp floating seed bead panels. Inspired by the earth’s tectonic plates and oceanic ridges, a series of evening dresses which mesh together a multitude of different textiles into an intricate puzzle, a Pangaea of surface texture.

Inspired by chinoiserie in the research for her Autumn Winter 2011 collection, Mary Katrantzou looked at priceless objets d’art and the refined eye of women who collect them: Coromandel screens, Faberge eggs, Qianlong dynasty china, Meissen porcelain. "I was inspired not just by the aesthetic of the objects themselves, but by the women who owned them. The objets d’art that originated from China inspired the garments themselves; the curvilinear forms of vases gave a fillip of volume to dresses, porcelain bowls become rounded skirts on pinafores. These possessions which hold so much cultural heritage, formed the basis for my hyper real, decorative prints, re‐engineered to the woman’s body." "It was an extremely diverse shortlist but ultimately we all agreed that Mary has not only created a strong and hugely appealing identity for her work but that she has put in place measures that, along with the support of this prize, should ensure an exciting and successful next stage of her career." Katrantzou told Vogue, "You go through different stages of growth in your business and this past year specifically has been huge for us so it's incredible to win now. Before the announcement I didn't really think, 'What if we win?' Everyone is just so strong in different ways, and everyone needs the award for different reasons, that you never really consider that. You are constantly called to raise your game by all the amazing talent that's around you here in London and that can inspire you to do great things. Having mentors like Alex Shulman, Sarah Mower, Caroline Rush and Natalie Massenet means that you get that boost and the advice you need as you go along, which is really important to nurture your business commercially as well as creatively. I'm so grateful." "Mary Katrantzou is incredibly deserving of this year's award,". Thank you to everyone who has supported the brand.

  • A Pursuit for Modernism: Backstage Beauty AW15

A tale of two opposites. Mary Katrantzou's Autumn Winter collection is inspired by Heritage Opulence Vs Techy. Val Garland from MAC Cosmetics took lead from Katrantzou's theme. “A doll lash, but not a dolly look” is how the makeup artist Val Garland described the bold approach to beauty backstage. To create the look, lead artist Val Garland working for M·A·C Cosmetics started with flawless, youthful skin by using M·A·C Studio Waterweight Foundation and adding Smoke Petal from M·A·C Trend Forecast Fall 15/Lip on the cheeks. Infusing a hint of modernism by borrowing tricks from the ’90s club kids, who would wear tiny dots beneath their eyes for dance floor drama, Garland followed the direct line of sight, drawing an oblong below the pupil with MAC’s Midnight Well eye shadow in black onyx. False lashes were then chopped into small, square sections and ironed (yes, actually ironed) flat before being layered onto the lower lashline just above the oblong for extra emphasis. The look was finished simply with a careful curl of the top lashes (for prettiness) and a generous dab of lip balm. In a collection where texture and vibrancy loomed large, this low-key but look-at-me beauty fit the bill.

  • The Inspiration

From the Victorian grandiose, a maximalist demonstration of wealth and social stature through heady excess, to the contemporary pursuit for minimalist luxury. Mary Katrantzou's Autumn Winter 2015 collection juxtaposes both paradigms, capturing the filtered beauty within each. The linear contrasts with the sinuous; the modernist restraint is in dialogue with the floridly embellished and "kenophobia" (a fear of empty spaces) is observed through a purist lens. As the final rehearsals take place today for the opening of the New York City Ballet Fall Gala, we can reveal the final costumes. Designed by Mary Katrantzou, the dancers will be taking to the stage tonight for newly appointed resident choreographer, Justin Peck's piece, Belles Lettres, which literally translates from French to English as “beautiful letters, set to an untitled piano piece by César Franck. The title, according to the choreographer has a dual meaning: One, the basic description of Ms. Katrantzou’s work, and two, a category of literature valued for its elegant aesthetics. Taking notes from her resort 2015 collection, Mary sought to construct a second skin for the dancers, incorporating the love letter lace applique into the garments to look as though they are floating on the body. The final creation consists of nude dresses for the ballerinas, with a light and airy tulle skirt for the women and bodysuits for the men.

  • Belles Lettres - Behind the Costumes

Tonight, Mary Katrantzou will showcase bespoke costumes at the New York City Ballet’s annual fall gala. The idea, conceptualised by NYCB board vice chair, Sarah Jessica Parker, was for each designer to team up with a choreographer to develop unique, custom ensembles that are both visually stunning and fully functional. Mary teamed up with NYCB choreographer, Justin Peck, to create the costumes for his ballet entitled 'Belles Lettres'. The nude, fitted leotards with lavender, yellow, and burgundy lace appliqués were inspired by the Mary Katrantzou Resort ’15 collection. “Watching the dancers in rehearsal brought a completely new perspective to the process of designing the costumes for the piece because I was suddenly seeing it as part of the audience,” said Mary of her design process for the pieces. “We had to make sure there were no restrictions in the dancers’ movement, it all came down to the physicality of the dancers and making sure it really was like a second skin for them.” Here we go behind the scenes at the costume shop at the New York institution, and get up close to the designs in the making.

  • Spring Summer 2015: Pangaea & Panthalassa

In early geologic times, the Earth was dominated by a supercontinent, the mass of the scattered geography we know today combined into a single body, smothering one-third of the planet’s surface and surrounded by a global ocean. That mass was dubbed Pangaea, meaning “all the Earth” and the ocean Panthalassa, "all the ocean." Some 200 million years ago, The jigsaw puzzle of land was pulled apart, to form something new. Pangaea and Panthalassa are the unifying ideas behind Mary Katrantzou’s spring/summer 2015 collection. In abstraction, the idea is evocative of movement, pulling and shifting; in allegorical terms, the birth of the earth, of its flora and fauna as well as the settling into position of our contemporary continents, offers creative source material. It inspires a narrative, expressed through a combination of naturalistic forms and abstract shapes breaking on the body. The palette of the collection shifts through earth tones of nude and sandstone and mossy olive, to pastel shades of coral, sky-blue and sea foam green and finally to vibrant, rich, heightened hues of the same palate. Fabrics are soft, tailoring fluid in light summer wools and tulle with sharp floating seed bead panels. Panelling also lend itself to ruptured baby doll dresses, pleats split to float away from the body. These dresses mesh together a multitude of different textiles into an intricate puzzle, a Pangaea of surface texture. The organic and the geometric are constantly juxtaposed, a dialogue between them continually explored. Lace is woven to represent foliage or intertwined serpents, motifs which also reappear in custom jacquards, coral embroidery and fil coupé organza. They symbolise natural life emerging from the newly formed continents of pre-history. Snakeskin patterns slithers across a scale-woven python lace, and foliate open-ended guipure designs are applied to bonded sea bead panels. Fantastical creatures, mythological hybrids from earth and sea, are translated into lace appliqué motifs. Complex seaweed and anemone embroidery is embedded into a series of shirt dresses. Inspired by the earth’s tectonic plates and oceanic ridges, a series of evening dresses, trousers and tops feature dramatic fissures of embroidery and panelling, occasionally erupting with horsehair embroideries. Accessories are treated with the printed seed bead application seen throughout the collection, including the Gianvito Rossi footwear and the MVK handbag. Intricate metal, enamel and embedded crystal jewellery allows the imagined prehistoric creatures of water and land to leap into three-dimensional reality: Pangaea and Panthalassa rediscovered, paradise regained. • The Love of Tikiman & Clocktopia

The Love of Tikiman and Clocktopia premiered on Monday evening at the British Fashion Fashion Film evening during London Fashion Week. The film, animated by Daniel Sannwald, was birthed from the Mary Katrantzou Autumn Winter 2014 collection inspired by signs and symbolism. Within the collection is a duo of dresses decorated with abstract collages of emblems, where symbols are given an additional purpose to form new symbols, these characters signify Tikiman & Clocktopia, the Mary Katrantzou tribe. The film plays with the language of symbols, with the visual values of culture, abstracting them from their origins and reinventing them as a connecting line of a new language, in this case, the love story of Tikiman and Clocktopia. Mary's collections are always thematic; there is a narrative which is conveyed through both print design and textile innovation, the film of Tikiman and Clocktopia explores this narrative further through film and storytelling. "Film breathes life into static photography, offering a new outlet to designers to showcase their work and tell a story to evoke emotion." said Mary of her first foray into the world of fashion film. "Where There is Love There is Life", once said Mahatma Ghandi. And they lived Happily Katrantzou Ever After... Stay tuned for the film on Marykatrantzou.com!

Reconstructed from a series of signs and symbols, ranging from a stop sign to the heraldic insignia of the Prince of Wales, as a whole they represent the hidden beauty of everyday symbology…

  • Mary Katrantzou for the New York City Ballet

This year, Mary Katrantzou will create custom designed costumes for the New York City Ballet’s Fall Gala opening night performance on September 23 alongside Carolina Herrera, Valentino Garavani, Thom Browne, and Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton. Mary Katrantzou worked together with resident choreographer Justin Peck to create the ideas for the looks, which are inspired by her second Resort offering for Spring Summer 2015. In order to emphasize the dancers movement and physiques, Mary wanted to create something subtle and agile to evoke a certain emotion and mimic Justin's clean choreography. Her designs act as a second skin for the dancers. For the Prime Male dancer, Mary has created a lace bodysuit, while the Prima ballerina’s costume exudes an ethereal air with an added translucent tulle skirt, the dancers will also wear pigmented undergarments for a touch of colour. Here, a sketch of the costumes portrays her delicate designs.

  • Mary Katrantzou Launches Resort 2015

Mary Katrantzou launches her second Resort collection, expanding her vocabulary of design with a collection based around typographical conceits. The theme dovetails neatly into the ideas emergent in Katrantzou's autumn/winter 2014 collection, a collection that took as its starting point communication using symbolic imagery, rather than words. In this collection, the letters of the alphabet become the images, graphic devices that are collaged and juxtaposed in combinations creating a code of visual appeal. The letters form the basis of the collection's textiles, type fonts embossed into block colour fabrics, woven into brocades and jacquards in grid like motifs, in glitter flocked onto chiffon and intricately worked into guipure and tulle laces. There are also subtle references in seam detailing, letters pieced into sleeves and bodices. Illuminated manuscripts of the Book of Kells inspire intricate pictorial interpretations of letters, worked in embroidery and lace, as well as dresses and suits in foliate patterns and prints, typography hidden inside the visuals. Embellished calligraphic figures float across the body to create a series of graphic appliqué "Love Letter" dresses. Colours are vibrant, shapes playful and easy. Shorts are abbreviated high on the leg and belted tightly, trouser suits are cut slim and collarless, crew necks echoed in dresses and frequently outlined with contrast piping. Outlining V-shaped godets or waists, or the C-curve of a neckline, they subtly add to the alphabet of this collection. Colours are chosen for their contrast, leading to unexpected combinations of tangerine and violet, absinthe and lipstick-red, and powder pink with electric yellow. Discover the collection at marykatrantzou.com now.

  • A Tribute To Charles James; A Dress by Mary Katrantzou

This year, our MET Costume Institute windows on Fifth Avenue will pay tribute to MET Gala honouree Charles James–a master of craft. James is known for applying mathematical precision and architectural vision to his clothing, manipulating the proportions of his garments to create a sculptural effect and uniquely contour a woman’s body, just as Mary Katrantzou uses print to flatter the female form. An interest, almost an obsession, has always surrounded the inner workings of a Charles James gown. One of the greatest couturiers of the 20th century, James proved that the interior of a garment can be as spectacular as the outer. Playing on this, Mary Katrantzou decided to reference one of James' famously displayed toiles, 'The Ribbon Dress'', located at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The sample represents part of the James' design processes from paper to stand. Referencing inner workings was a link between us at Mary Katrantzou and this great Fashion House of the Past. The Mary Katrantzou Autumn Winter 2014 collection showcased various textile developments, one of which was the Toolbox Lace, a lace derived from the interior layout of a workman's toolbox. With a play on the 'workings', a hint of mannequin realness, a harmony and fusion between the past, the present and the future is created. The fabrication and the lace insertion satisfies the Mary Katrantzou aesthetic and signature, while length, construction and working drape tape on the bodice pay homage to Charles James and project a timeless original. The design sits alongside works from Ralph Rucci, Libertine, Naeem Khan, Rosie Assoulin, Giambattista Valli, and Rodarte in the window of the Bergdorf Avenue Fifth Avenue Store in New York. For the first time, these exclusive one-of-a-kind gowns will be available for purchase directly from the window display. Please call +1 212 872 2743 for inquiries. View the windows Monday, May 5 through Monday, May 19.

  • The Making Of Mary Katrantzou's first Bridal

Get an exclusive look behind the scenes during the making of the first Mary Katrantzou Bridal Gown. Mary reveals her inspiration behind the bespoke dress, "When Carolina first came to the studio we started looking through our archive, pulling her favorite pieces from past collections and deciding how we could create something perfectly tailored to her. She loved the “cake a flake” and “ivory” dresses from my Fall 2012 collection, but also the sporty necklines from my Spring 2013 “postage stamp/banknote” collection. We started sketching options and then incorporating elements of designs she was interested in, but the dress constantly evolved in every fitting. We didn’t want to do a classic strapless dress; we wanted it to be modern and original. The result was a modern yet timeless gown using 120 meters of chiffon muslin—each layer hemmed with bridal horsehair—a full crinoline underskirt, and a racerback bodice. One thing Carolina really wanted was lots of fabric and movement, so the focus was on the skirt and designing it in a way that it appears effortless. We didn’t feel it was necessary to embellish the dress or do anything to over the top —it was more about the movement. Everyone was playing with it all night long and she danced and swirled in it for 8 hours! It wasn’t a simple dress but it had a purity in its design and its lines that I think really suited her. " For both parties it was a collaborative experience, and a particularly personal one, " I became so emotionally involved—particularly during the later fittings. And we had 8 fittings! Carolina and I became really close friends throughout the process. She was so open and positive and even though I had never done a wedding dress before, she really trusted me to create the perfect dress for her. I flew to the Dominican Republic for the wedding and when it all came together I felt so humbled to be part of such a special day in her life. It felt like I’d known her for years".

" Everyone was playing with it all night long and she danced and swirled in it for 8 hours! It wasn’t a simple dress but it had a purity in its design and its lines that I think really suited her." said Mary of the design. For both parties, it was a once in a lifetime experience, "I became so emotionally involved—particularly during the later fittings. And we had 8 fittings! • Alexander Fury talks Brogues

As Fashion Editor of the Independent and Fashion connoisseur, Alex Fury knows a thing or two about shoes. Here, he explains his obsession with brogues to Harvey Nichols and tells us why unisex is by no means sexless. "A gentleman’s brogue on a woman is a nod to gender-bending, but can easily be dressed up or down to be butch or femme, for him or for her. Simply put: I don’t like casual shoes. Training shoes are for sport, not for wearing everyday. I also think my feet are too wide, hence why I prefer a shoe of thick, sturdy leather that acts like an orthopaedic corset, shaping them into the slender soles I wish they were. Suffice to say, I’m not a fan of comfort. Although, as an alternative to towering heels, the idea of non-casual comfort is the appeal of brogues for many a woman." • Autumn Winter 2014: Symbolism

The inspiration for Mary Katrantzou’s Autumn/Winter 2014 collection can be found everywhere: the symbolic exchange of a stop sign, the meaning of colour, heraldic insignia, the symbolic charge of a rose, uniforms, uniformity. Each has an immediate visual impact, a language of their own that suggests an idea, a belief, an action. Mary Katrantzou has used print and form in the past to create her own distinctive language. For this collection, there is no print. Instead she plays with the language of symbols, with the visual values of culture, abstracting them from their origins and reinventing them as a connecting line of a new aesthetic language. Signs and symbols, uniform or unique, emblematic of an idea.Lines are sleek and lean, often elongated and ground-skimming. Pleats animate fabric, garments layered to give depth to each look. Just as a symbol can be immediately read by the eye, these garments are an exercise in textile innovation, each one having an immediate visual impact and then a deeper, subtler meaning, only unravelled when the specially engineered brocades, laces and intricately worked surfaces are examined up close. Rather than cleaving into their distinct parts, Mary Katrantzou cross-pollinates her signs and symbols. Chain-mail butchers aprons are reinterpreted as a metallic dress under slick suiting or adorned with metallic cookie-cutter jewels; fragile lace patterned with road-signs and tool box interiors, and bespoke military-inspired appliques are used as decorative devices. The meaning is not lost, but the symbols are given an additional meaning, a new aesthetic impact. Sometimes, the collaging forms new symbols. Tokenistic gods, pagan silhouettes reminiscent of samurai warriors are created from collections of signs and symbols, themselves forming new emblems that signify Mary Katrantzou. Indeed, the free exchange of symbols throughout derives an additional meaning, to denote the wearer as a member of the Katrantzou tribe.

Kirsten walked along side another supermodel, Emma Balfour, opening and closing the show at the esteemed PHILLIPS Gallery in London.

Owen is the only possible rival to Kate Moss in terms of relevant longevity in her profession, and any designer who employs her clearly has something other than the moment of this particular season in mind. Katrantzou’s collections have often taken the long view, functioning as distillations of memories, souvenirs of life to be savored and treasured. That notion was stronger than ever today. It was a beautiful new chapter for a designer who is fearless in her fusion of fashion and philosophy.” Style.com
